To celebrate the 2008 National Farmers Market Week, Secretary Roger Allbee challenged agriculture commissioners in all 50 states to spend a day eating only local foods. This challenge allowed agricultural leaders to not only celebrate the foods available in their home region, but also to join together as a network to emphasize the national importance of strong local food systems. Approximately 25% of states participated in the first annual National Challenge.
