In the spring of 1990, a Holstein calf was selected as the Vermont Dairy Spokescalf. Her name, "Vermontica," was chosen from almost 3,000 entries submitted by school children throughout the state. Vermontica’s job is to promote Vermont’s dairy industry, emphasizing the importance of the industry on the state’s economy. She also has the responsibility of relating the nutritional importance of milk and other dairy products to children and adults.
Vermontica made her first appearance in 1991 and went "on tour" that summer. The tour was a great success, drawing flocks of young children and admiring adults. It gave many kids an opportunity to pet a cow and see one "up close and personal." The result is not only a greater awareness of cows, but a greater interest in dairying and dairy products. This translates into an increased consumption of a healthy Vermont food, as well as a wholesome attraction for your community event.
This year the original Vermontica is too busy being a productive milk cow to be on the road (milking cows do not travel well). However, "Vermontica" was always meant to be a symbol of the dairy industry, rather than an individual animal. Any calf in Vermont is a Vermontica and that is the message that we want to convey to our young consumers. With this in mind, we have arranged for local dairy farms to provide a calf for various events. In this way, Vermontica is truly a local heroine, giving back to her particular community.
