In 2007, the Vermont State Legislature passed bill H. 522 The Viability of Vermont Agriculture. This legislation included a request that the Vermont Agency of Agriculture and Department of Buildings and General Services review state food purchasing practices to determine where Vermont could do more to support local agriculture.
The resources below outline current activities related to local foods purchasing by state agencies and state-funded entities, such as the state colleges and university. The legislation did not include primary and secondary schools. More information on programs for schools is available from the Ag in the Classroom and Farm-to-School grants programs.
This website is still being worked on and expanded – if you have recommendations for useful links related to local foods and state government, please send them to helen.jordan@state.vt.us. Please check back often for updates.
