Mad River Souper Bowl Party a Success

Local food enthusiasts in the Mad River Valley are closing out January with Vermont’s very first Souper Bowl. No football involved.

The Souper Bowl event, at the Round Barn in Waitsfield, features music from the Gordon Stone Band, kids’ activities, and, of course, local soup! Contributing restaurants include:

  • Big Picture Café (Creamy Tomato Soup featuring Fresh Vermont Grown Tomatoes)
  • Chez Henri (All Valley Bean Soup)
  • Common Man (Misty Knoll Chicken Soup with Gaylord Farm Root Vegetables
  • Cooking from the Heart (Vermont Cheddar Ale Soup)
  • Green Cup Café (All Valley Black Bean Soup with Garlic and Leeks)
  • Michael's Good To Go (All Valley Smoked Pork with Sweet Corn, Onions and Shallots)
  • Sweet Pea/Spirit Café (Curried Potato with Fried Tempeh)
  • Millbrook Inn & Restaurant (Baked Winter Squash Soup with Roasted Garlic and Sage)
  • Warren Store (Pureed Golden Root Vegetable)

SouperBowlRed Hen Bakery, American Flatbread, Champlain Orchards and the Three Mountain Café contributed non-soup additions. And those without soup bowls have a chance to buy handmade bowls and mugs while supplies last.

The January 27th even sold out early. Clearly pleased with the sellout, Nancy Baron, coordinator for the event, said, “It goes to show that people believe in what the Localvores are doing and want to support our local farmers. With this type of response, there are already rumblings of Souper Bowl II.”

The excitement isn’t only about a good time with good food; proceeds will help the Localvores purchase fresh local produce, meat and eggs for the Mad River Valley Food Shelf as well as fund upcoming Localvore programs.

When asked about other groups around the state might hold similar events in the future, Robin McDermott, co-founder of the Mad River Valley Localvores, said, “This type of event would be easy to do anywhere in Vermont. In Vermont we have amazing chefs dedicated to using local foods and farmers growing and storing food year round in every corner of the state. With that, you have the basis of a great Souper Bowl event.” She also joked that this party might be the first truly original idea her group has had – so she looks forward to someone stealing it.
