Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Engineered Seeds

Genetically Modified Organisms

"Genetically modified organism" (GMO), as defined by Vermont statute, means any organism altered or produced through genetic modification from a donor, vector, recipient organism, or by other means using modern molecular techniques (6 VSA chapter 84 ยง 1030).

As such, if a GMO is determined to directly or indirectly injure or cause disease or damage to any beneficial organisms, plants, parts of plants, or plant products, it is considered a “plant pest” by the same statute, and is subject to regulation by the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.  This includes establishing quarantines, permitting requirements for use or transport of plant pests, and engage in presence or abundance surveys and eradication/suppression activities of plant pests.

Currently, the only GMOs regulated by the Agency are agricultural seeds offered for sale in the State of Vermont.
