Diseases Carried by Ticks

There are two diseases carried by ticks in Vermont; Lyme disease and Powassan virus. Ticks are known to carry other diseases but we have not found evidence of them in Vermont. Lyme disease is a bacterial disease in humans which is transmitted through the bite of an infected deer tick. This tick species can be found in every county of Vermont. Although the level of infected ticks with Lyme disease is low, it is important to consider using repellants to protect against tick bites. Powassan virus is an encephalitis virus carried by the woodchuck tick. The risk of contracting this disease is very low in Vermont.
