Carpenter ants sometimes move into our homes and destroy wood. You may not even know that they are there until you begin to see large black ants (1/2 inch to 3/4 inch) walking around. Their presence in the home often indicates a moisture problem, either with roof flashing or excessive moisture in the walls. Carpenter ants are often hard to get rid of because their colonies are usually well concealed inside the wall or ceiling.
