The emerald ash borer (EAB) is native to China, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. In the summer of 2002, this insect was discovered in Detroit, MI. More recent infestations have been detected in OH, VA, MD and Ontario, Canada. Adult insects are elongated, slim, metallic green and measure about 3/8 to 1/2 inch long. The adult insect is typically observed in the vicinity of ash trees from May through August. The larvae can be found beneath the bark of ash trees, in tunnels, from June though the fall. These insect exit holes are D-shaped and typically measure about 1/8 inch across. All species of ash seem to be susceptible. This insect has not been detected in VT.
